DIY Burned Cork Trivet

Welcome back friends!

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite easy crafty projects!

I’m sure you have some version of hot trivets in your kitchen right now. I personally love the cork ones. I think they really protect my counters and table, and more than anything, I loved that I found a way to personalize them!

I bought this wood burning tool a few years ago hoping to broaden my crafting capabilities. (If you buy it at Hobby Lobby, remember to use your 40% off coupon!) I think it works wonderfully, but my only complaints are that the handle does get warm/hot to the touch after being on a long time, and it gets quite uncomfortable to hold for an extended duration. I haven’t compared it to other wood burning tools though, so I’m not sure how uniform that is across these kinds of products.

I originally bought it intending to use it to make signs and also personalized cutting boards. I’ve done both of these things and this tool works great for both! I was walking through Ikea and saw these cork trivets, and thought to myself, “I’ll bet my wood burner would work great on those!” I bought a pack and tried them out shortly after. They are SO easy to burn. On wood, I’m usually having to go over certain spots several times on my highest heat setting to get the deep scorch marks I’m looking for, but burning on these trivets is so simple and low maintenance. I used my Silhouette Cameo 3 (which is hard to buy now that the 4 is out) to help me pick out a design, cut it out, outline the design with a pen, then burn away!

I have included a picture of my trivets and I also linked my How To video below. Enjoy!
